This year, with Hanukah/Thanksgiving, Thanksgivingakah, it's an opportunity to think about how Hanukah and Thanksgiving relate to one another. Hanukah and Christmas, for example, often get paired, even though they are not religiously linked together. A rare quirk of the calendar has created an overlap of Thanksgiving with the start of Hanukkah. The last time it happened was 1888, and it won't happen for more than 75,000 years. (Try to keep up with me on this.) Thanksgiving is the 4th Thursday in November. Hanukkah is the 25th day of the Jewish month of Kislev. Chanukah was declared a Jewish national holiday 2178 years ago. Thanksgiving was declared a national American holiday on the last Thursday of every November by Abraham Lincoln in 1863. Before then, Thanksgiving was celebrated on different dates in different states, so we won’t count those. With Thanksgiving and Hanukkah taking place around the same time this year, let's emphasize gratitude along with gift-giving this holiday.
