Ye Governor of Ye Colony. That first formal declaration was three years after their arrival, when practices and habits had begun to solidify. However, the very first Thanksgiving was in 1621, most likely in November, a year after their arrival. In 1789 Congress invited newly-elected President, George Washington, to invite the nation to participate in a day of “public thanksgiving and prayer.” The chosen day was Thursday, November 26, 1789. The man to step forward in Plymouth colony was William Bradford. After the first governor elected under the Mayflower Compact perished from the harsh winter, Bradford was elected governor for the next thirty years. In May of 1621, he performed the colony's first marriage ceremony. Resolved, that it be recommended to the several states to appoint THURSDAY the 9th of December next, to be a day of publick and solemn THANKSGIVING to Almighty God, for his mercies, and of PRAYER, for the continuance of his favour and protection to these United States; to beseech him that he would be graciously pleased to influence our publick ... Because Jefferson withheld his reasoning from the public, it made him open to Federalist political attacks.
