In this poster, we take a look at just a few Native through the prism of three main themes that understanding both American Indians and the of the Thanksgiving holiday. The themes are: • Environment: traditional knowledge about and understandings of the natural world. • Community: the role that group identity plays cultures. Understanding Thanksgiving from an Indigenous Perspective. Indigenous Thanksgiving isn’t just a one-day holiday; it’s an ongoing celebration of life, community, and connection to the natural world. Giving thanks is a longstanding, central tradition among Indigenous peoples that is still practiced today. Native traditions are distinct, complex, and specific to each individual nation. Today we take the opportunity to set the record straight, debunk myths, and acknowledge Native Americans as contemporary Peoples with dynamic and thriving cultures. It is a time to remember ancestral history as well as a day to acknowledge and protest the racism and oppression which they continue to experience today.
