Today is the 396 th anniversary of the conclusion of a treaty between the English settlers of New Plymouth Colony –among whom were the Pilgrims of Thanksgiving fame–and the Wampanoag people, the indigenous people of the area that comprises what is now southeastern Massachusetts. That 1621 celebration is remembered as the "First Thanksgiving in Plymouth." There are two (and only two) primary source descriptions of the events of the fall of 1621. In Mourt’s Relation, Edward Winslow writes: Written between November 1620 and November 1621, it describes in detail what happened from the landing of the Pilgrims at Cape Cod, though their exploring and eventual settling at Plymouth, to their relations with the surrounding Indians, up to the First Thanksgiving and the arrival of the ship Fortune. The first account is William Bradford’s journal titled Of Plymouth Plantation and the other is a publication written by Edward Winslow titled Mourt’s Relations. What is known is that the pilgrims held the first Thanksgiving feast to celebrate the successful fall harvest. Usually cited as Mourt's relation on account of the signature of G. Mourt, found at the end of the address to the reader, though it is clear that he did no more than commend the work to the public. There is general agreement that G. Mourt was George Morton, and that the Relation was the work of Bradford and Winslow Mourt's Relation, published in 1622 CE, encouraged members of the congregation still in Europe, and others, to follow the pilgrims' example in colonizing present-day New England. In a letter to a friend in England, “E.W.” (Pilgrim Edward Winslow) wrote the only eye-witness record of the celebration that survives. It was published in the colony’s first promotional pamphlet known today as Mourt’s Relation. Mourt’s Relation is a collection of 5 relations (written accounts) of the Pilgrims’ first year in New England and is made up of journal entries and personal letters.
