If you were living in the New York City metro area during the late 1970s and early 1980s, you may recall a delightfully peculiar tradition that occurred during the Thanksgiving holiday season: the movie marathons broadcast on a local television station that featured films related to King Kong and Godzilla. But King Kong’s connection to Channel 9 did not end when the station changed hands. Not only had being bought out by by MCA/Universal resulted in the station now being called WWOR-TV, but the decision was made to include references to it in amusement park attractions featuring King Kong! For those that were either removed from the New York/New Jersey area, or are too young to remember, WOR-TV would play their annual King Kong marathon every Thanksgiving. A tradition which typically consisted of the 1933 original, Son of Kong, and Mighty Joe Young. For over ten years, beginning in the early 1970s, King Kong was shown by Channel 9 (the former WOR-TV), on Thanksgiving — making the movie one of the Tri-State area’s more unusual holiday... The station was New York’s channel 9 (the former WOR-TV) and in the next decade it broadcast the movie every Thanksgiving, before long adding the sequel, Son of Kong, and 1949’s Mighty Joe Young, another stop-motion animation picture, from Kong’s creators. The annual tradition lasted until 1985. By now, most of you probably remember WOR-TV’s (Channel 9) annual Thanksgiving Day and day after Thanksgiving airings of several giant monster classics. These fun flicks provided a great escapism after gorging several pounds of holiday goodies.
