The five kernels of corn help us to remember five things for which we are thankful. The first kernel reminds us that God loves us. The second kernel reminds us that God provides for all our needs. Today I want to share with you a fun and simple Thanksgiving tradition that I love, the Legend of the Five Kernels of Corn. This Thanksgiving tradition is a wonderful gratitude activity to recognize how much you have and how blessed you are each year during the holidays. It can tell you why, when the wheat crop planted with grain brought from Europe failed, Wampanoag corn kept the Pilgrims from starving, and why it wove itself so deeply into the diets of the... Corn was vital for the early settlers’ survival and showed cooperation between the Pilgrims and Native Americans. At Thanksgiving, corn is both eaten and used as colorful decoration, representing a good harvest and the unity of the first Thanksgiving. 8. Many people follow a tradition of placing five kernels of corn on the empty plate at each place on the Thanksgiving dinner table. These five kernels of corn serve as a reminder of days when food was scarce and how God provides for our needs. Corn was on the table at the first Thanksgiving dinner and continues to be a staple of the holiday today. Edward Winslow, one of the founders of Plymouth Colony, wrote that the spring before Thanksgiving, the settlers planted 20 acres of Indian corn (also known as flint corn). Corn was part of the Iroquois "Three Sisters" tradition for growing, along with beans and squash. Planted together, these crops gave each other structural support, helped fertilize the soil, and, when eaten, provided a nutritious balance of carbohydrates, protein, healthy fats, and vitamins. In our home, we set out five kernels of corn at each place around the table, sharing the story passed down through generations. These five simple kernels have grown to become a cherished part of our Thanksgiving tradition in our home.
