Some El Paso, Texas, citizens claim that the first Thanksgiving occurred on the Rio Grande on April 30, 1598, four centuries ago, a few miles downstream from their city’s modern location. It was celebrated by Don Juan de Onate’s expedition upon reaching the river en route to colonize northern New Mexico for Spain. The story goes that Juan de Onate, member of a prominent Spanish family, had been given a land grant by the Spanish Viceroy in New Mexico. His land was situated in the northern Rio Grande Valley among the Pueblo Indians. The first Texas Thanksgiving happened in 1598 near present-day San Elizario, Texas, a full 23 years before the Pilgrims' famous feast. This groundbreaking event was led by Spanish explorer Don Juan de Oñate, who had embarked on a perilous expedition from Mexico to settle the unexplored territory of Nuevo Mexico. For the past six years on the last Saturday and Sunday in April, the annual re-enactment of Don Juan de Oñate’s “First Thanksgiving” held at El Paso’s Chamizal National Park. In 1659, Franciscan Missionaries established the Nuestra Senora de Guadalupe mission. The events leading up to the First Thanksgiving in the New World began in 1573 when the Spanish King Felipe II signed a document called the Colonization Laws of Spain.
