In sometimes striking detail, they give a sense of what Thanksgiving has meant in certain prisons across the ages. Food. Food is likely the most iconic element of Thanksgiving day, and that is no different in prison. Our collection offered several glimpses into what the menu looked like in different facilities. Around 5 p.m. on Thanksgiving, another holiday miracle occurred. An officer returned our supplies and dessert. The Thanksgiving feast was back on. I suspected the administration changed their decision after receiving unhappy phone calls and emails from our unit’s staff. The morning of Thanksgiving, we got straight to work on our feast. I’ve spent almost 18 years of Thanksgivings in nine different prisons. Prior to Correctional Industries (CI) taking over food services, we looked forward to a homemade brunch of chocolate chip pancakes, waffles, sausage links, scrambled eggs, real orange juice and chocolate milk. But on Thanksgiving, I skipped the mess hall: I was lucky. I had a visitor. The person I was dating had driven 2.5 hours to go through Albion Correctional Facility’s tedious screening process and sit across from me at a beat-up table in a noisy visiting room. Even though poor choices landed people in state prisons, holiday observances such as Thanksgiving continued even during incarceration. Prisons began observing Thanksgiving in 1868. Daniel Genis' Thanksgiving dinner specialty was always fried mackerel. Not the most traditional dish, to be sure, but nor were the circumstances traditional: he was celebrating the holiday in prison. After the Thanksgiving weekend ends, inmates must carry on with prison routines as usual. The return to strictly regimented schedules and policies after getting a small taste of holiday freedom can plunge prisoners into depression or sadness. At the State Correctional Institution at Chester, a medium security facility about 15 miles southwest of Philadelphia, the prison chefs will offer up a special meal with traditional Thanksgiving fixings and extra baked goods. Prisoners can find their way to thankfulness—even in a cell. And like Sean, many are already looking for ways to pay forward the blessings they have received.
