An employee works in the hospitality industry and earns $20 an hour. • If you work on a holiday, you are entitled to either your normal wages plus time-and-a-half for those hours or your regular wages plus another paid day off. Holidays: New Year's Day, Family Day, Good Friday, Victoria Day, Canada Day, B.C. Day (first Monday in August), Labour Day, Thanksgiving Day, Remembrance Day and Christmas Day. As per the Canada Labour Code, employees who are required to work on a general holiday are entitled to receive holiday pay plus a rate that is at least one and a half times (1.5x) their regular rate of wages for the time worked on that day. In order to compensate for the labour, Canada offers time and a half which is when you’re paid one and a half of your salary. If your rate is $20/hr, you multiply that by 1.5. $20 x 1.5 = $30/hr. If you end up working an entire 8 hour shift you’ll get: $30 x 8hrs = $240. An employee who meets the eligibility criteria and works on the holiday must receive time and a half for the hours worked, plus a regular day’s pay. Or the employee may receive regular pay for the hours worked plus another day off with pay.
