It was founded in 1964 and is the chief operator of Thanks-Giving Square, providing resources so that citizens from diverse backgrounds can use thanksgiving and gratitude as ways to heal divisions and enhance mutual understanding. Thanks-Giving Square is a private park and public facility anchoring the Thanksgiving Commercial Center district of downtown Dallas, Texas, United States. Thanks-Giving Square in Dallas was founded by a group of businessmen and religious leaders in 1964. The city had a history, going back to at least the early 1900s, of ecumenical religious celebrations between Protestants, Catholics, and Jews in the downtown area. Part of the vision for a reimagined Thanks-Giving Square includes turning a stretch of Pacific Avenue into a linear park that could host food trucks and picnic tables. The Thanks-Giving Foundation owns and operates Thanks-Giving Square, a contemplation garden, exhibition hall and interfaith chapel nestled in the heart of downtown Dallas. The Foundation strives to make North Texas a better place to live, work and play by educating, inspiring and moving its people towards becoming the City of Thanks-Giving. Thanks-Giving Square has been a magnificent and important part of downtown Dallas for over 40 years. Centered around the virtue of gratitude, the founders employed one of the most influential architects/designers of the day, Philip Johnson.
