In 1941, a Congressional Joint Resolution officially set the fourth Thursday of November as a national holiday for Thanksgiving. Today, Thanksgiving is a time when many families come together, and many churches are open for special services. This year the federal holiday Thanksgiving falls on November 23, the fourth Thursday of the month. But it wasn’t always so. Today’s post looks at Thanksgiving as a federal holiday and the various days it has been commemorated. The first official proclamation of a national Thanksgiving holiday didn’t come until 1863, when President Abraham Lincoln called for an annual Thanksgiving celebration on the final Thursday in... The House agreed to the amendment, and Roosevelt signed the resolution on Dec. 26, 1941, establishing the fourth Thursday in November as the federal Thanksgiving Day holiday. On September 28, 1789, just before leaving for recess, the first Federal Congress passed a resolution asking that the President of the United States recommend to the nation a day of thanksgiving. On October 3, 1789, President George Washington issued a proclamation naming Thursday, November 26, 1789, as an official holiday of "sincere and humble thanks." The nation then celebrated its first Thanksgiving under its new Constitution. This was just the third federal holiday to be declared. Only Independence Day and Washington’s birthday are older. Thanksgiving didn’t become a national holiday until the height of the Civil War in 1863, when President Lincoln issued a proclamation urging Americans to ask God to “heal the wounds of the nation.” Thanksgiving Day did not become an official holiday until Northerners dominated the federal government. While sectional tensions prevailed in the mid-19th century, the editor of the popular magazine Godey’s Lady’s Book, Sarah Josepha Hale, campaigned for a national Thanksgiving Day to promote unity. President George Washington was the first to issue a proclamation for the holiday in 1789, designating Thursday, November 26 “for the People of the United States a day of public thanksgiving. ” This marked the first national celebration of the holiday under the new Constitution.
