The concept of thankfulness in the New Testament comes from the use of two Greek words. The first is charizomai , which comes from charis , "grace." The second is homologeo , "to confess, acknowledge," (Heb. 13:15), (cf. also exomologeo , [Matt. 11:25]). What Is the Thanksgiving Offering in the Old Testament? A study of thanksgiving not only investigates words but it examines practices and themes throughout the Bible. To do this, we need to review the “thanksgiving offering,” the religious and theological context of giving thanks. In the Law of Moses we find a prescribed form for giving thanks in a special offering (Leviticus 7:11-34). Here we learn the proper how and why for offering thanks. The offering outlined in Leviticus 7 is called a “peace offering” or “fellowship offering.” From the Old Testament to the teachings of Jesus, thanksgiving is an essential theme. Whether it’s through the Psalms, where David pours out his gratitude, or the Apostle Paul’s letters where he encourages believers to give thanks in all circumstances, these examples offer profound lessons. The Feast of Tabernacles was a harvest time festival of thanksgiving to rejoice over God's abundant blessings. It also served to remind the Israelites that God lovingly took care of them when they sojourned the wilderness after leaving Egyptian bondage (Leviticus 23:43). In the Old Testament, the harvest was observed by the feast of Succoth or the Feast of Booths. The feast was a reminder of God’s bountiful goodness and the blessing of God’s providence in the lives of his people. This Thanksgiving Sunday, as farmers are giving thanks for a bountiful yield, as in the days of old, we pause to ask ourselves: Firstfruits was a Jewish feast held in the early spring at the beginning of the grain harvest. It was observed on Nissan 16, which was the third day after Passover and the second day of the Feast of Unleavened Bread. Firstfruits was a time of thanksgiving for God’s provision. Leviticus 23:9-14 institutes the firstfruits offering. In the Old Testament, during the time of harvest, the Israelites were commanded to leave the edges of their fields unharvested so that the poor and foreigners could gather food. It’s a reminder that our harvests are not just for us—they are for sharing. The Old Testament use of the word thanksgiving (in the majority of cases) comes from the Hebrew todah (Strong's Concordance #H8426), which means the extension of the hand.
