The origins of the term are simple enough: “thanksgiving” is a compound noun made up of the words “thanks” and “giving.” But what might be surprising is that the word was first used in the 1530s, more than a hundred years before the Pilgrim’s first “thanksgiving.” While no record exists of the first Thanksgiving’s exact menu, much of what we know about what happened at the first Thanksgiving comes from Pilgrim chronicler Edward Winslow, who wrote: As the first President of the United States, George Washington proclaimed the first nationwide thanksgiving celebration in America marking November 26, 1789, "as a day of public thanksgiving and prayer, to be observed by acknowledging with grateful hearts the many and signal favours of Almighty God", [26] and calling on Americans to "unite in ...
