Thanksgiving Day 1942 was a jarring experience, not just for the U.S. service members half a world away from home but also to the countries suddenly playing host to a wholly unfamiliar holiday. Thanksgiving is a federal holiday in the United States celebrated on the fourth Thursday of November. [2] Outside the United States, it is sometimes called American Thanksgiving to distinguish it from the Canadian holiday of the same name and related celebrations in other regions. Only 32 states ultimately celebrated on the new Thanksgiving date. After a survey of 200 stores depicted no real economic benefit, Roosevelt announced that 1942’s Thanksgiving would be held... America was thrust into WWII. Countless men, young and not so young, joined the armed forces. Women served in the Red Cross and took factory jobs to help keep tanks and airplanes rolling off the assembly lines. On Nov. 13, 1942 Macy’s Jack Strauss donated the giant balloons to Mayor Fiorello LaGaurdia. In 1942, the first wartime Thanksgiving in America in World War II, only sugar was rationed, but shortages of meat and butter challenged housewives to create innovative menus. Thanksgiving now occurs in America on the fourth Thursday of November – but it has not always been the case. Here, Mac Guffey looks at how President Franklin D. Roosevelt changed the date of Thanksgiving in 1939 – and the issues it caused. We’re using historical newspapers to look back 75 years at how Americans celebrated Thanksgiving in 1944 during World War II. Freedom from Want, also known as The Thanksgiving Picture or I'll Be Home for Christmas, is the third of the Four Freedoms series of four oil paintings by American artist Norman Rockwell. The works were inspired by United States President Franklin D. Roosevelt's 1941 State of the Union Address, known as Four Freedoms. So it was in November 1942 for the U.S. soldiers who had been sent to Europe to beat back the forces of fascism during World War II.
